"Where's Your Moses Now?" Musings on Faith
Suggested donation $5.
As this month's reading finds us smack dab in the middle of the spring Judeo Christian holiday season please join us for "Where's Your Moses Now…Musings on Faith".
No, it does not count as mass, but we have a fantastic line-up of readers: Don Gecewicz, Jason Grunebaum, Hugh Musick, Marc Smith, Elaine Soloway, Megan Stielstra, Eden Robins and Lisa Rosenthal.
We will serve macaroons, Manischewitz, and triscuits. All faiths and faithless are welcome!
A note about our readings:
They are open to the public but they are
not "open mikes". The readers are selected by invitation of The Uptown
Writers Space and members are free to submit their work for the readers
series.
Future Classes and Workshops
Marc Smith's Performance Poetry Workshop
Saturday March 31st 11-3pm
Sunday April 1st 11-3pm
Marc Smith's performance poetry workshop introduces students to the
fundamentals of performing poetry professionally and effectively on
stage in a public forum. By the end of the workshop, the shyest, most
inexperienced student will have the confidence to read or recite poetry
on stage to peers and strangers alike. Through writing exercises (some
playful, some more introspective) students will begin to understand the
close relationship between text and performance, and experience the joy
writing and performing can bring.
As you might know Marc Smith is the creator and founder of the International Poetry Slam movement.
As stated in the PBS television series, The United States of Poetry, a "strand of new poetry began at Chicago's Green Mill Tavern in 1987 when Marc Smith found a home for the Poetry Slam." Since then, performance poetry has spread throughout the world, exported to over 500 cities large and small.
Chalking up more than 2,000 engagements in nightclubs, concert halls, libraries, universities -- and on top of the occasional hot dog stand -- Marc continues to entertain and inspire audiences as diverse and eager as any to be found in the realm fine arts. He has performed at the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Institute, Galway's Cruit Festival, Denmark's Roskilde Festival, Ausburg's ABC Brecht Festival, and the Queensland Poetry Fest in Australia. He has hosted over 1000 standing room only shows at the Green Mill's original slam and has been featured on CNN, 60 Minutes, and National Public Radio. He narrated the Sourcebooks release Spoken Word Revolution and has recently authored The Complete Idiot's Guide to Slam Poetry with Joe Kraynak (Alpha/Penguin, 2004). Marc's volume of poetry, Crowdpleaser is available from Collage Press.

Every other month we will offer a movie night at Uptown Writers hosted by David Kodeski. David is especially interested in showing films that could somehow connect with the world of writers, but of course pretty much anything goes. We will provide popcorn and wine and you bring what you need to feel comfortable if you have to sit on the floor.
Next movie night TBA.
Introducing myself?
Hm.
Hello. David Kodeski here, self anointed UWS Film Festival
Programmer. When Susan and Julie suggested that there might be some
interest in hosting semi-regular movie nights at the Writer's Space,
I immediately made it known that I've always wanted to run a film
series. I was especially interested in showing films that could
somehow connect with the writerly world of writers and what writers
do. Of course, this allows limitless freedom. Pretty much anything
goes. I'd guess though that most of the films will steer away from
multi-million dollar blockbusters with lots of plot and minimal
character development where things blow up real good and often.
Then again, you never know.
